Announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Budget and approved by the Union Cabinet, Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which is also referred to as NamoCare or ModiCare scheme, will bring a paradigm shift in the healthcare centre. This annual healthcare scheme will provide Rs 5 lakh insurance coverage to around 10.74 crore families under National Health Protection Mission (NHPM).

Despite the family size, health coverage will be given to vulnerable families across the nation. The families that will be eligible for this scheme will be selected based on occupational and deprivation criteria according to the SECC data.
This is billed as the world’s largest health care programme, which is funded by the government. For the identification of families under NHPM, mobile numbers of beneficiaries will be enough for admitting any family member of a beneficiary in a hospital under this scheme.

The namocare scheme is a new opportunity for poor families across India to get health benefits from nearby health and wellness care centres. Primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare access will be offered to the community. This is going to ensure that every citizen of India gets quality healthcare at an affordable price. This is indeed a great initiative to develop a healthy and fit nation in the coming years.
How will the new scheme work with existing primary health centres?
Comprehensive primary care will be provided to the patients in existing sub-health centres, as well as health and wellness centres. Until now, we were given the only selective type of primary care that’s just limited to CHC and to communicable diseases like malaria, TB, etc. But there was no proper medical care for non-communicable diseases including mental health. Under the new healthcare scheme, health and wellness centres will be offering a wider band of services for both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Moreover, there will be more focus on preventing the diseases and promoting health in long run.
As per the current scenario, healthcare centres provide fracture care. This means that only basic facility is provided, where the patient is provided the care and then requested to come back again after a night or a few days. But under NHPS healthcare centres will work in a better way to identify cases that are referred to secondary or tertiary care.
The secondary can tertiary level cases will be given free care and assistance under the national health protection scheme. Plus, subsequent follow-ups will be given to all these cases at all primacy healthcare centres. This new scheme is indeed going to require a large partnership with different stakeholders, but it will be a game-changer for the entire Indian healthcare
To what extent IT has been incorporated?
Another important element of Ayushman Bharat Yojana is going to be a strong IT backbone. This scheme is going to work hand-in-hand with the best minds working with IT systems in India as well as the entire world to offer the best healthcare services.
Firstly the team will work with track 1, which requires around 4-6 months duration for operating certain modules. After the completion of 1st track, track 2 will begin and this one is going to be much bigger and far-sighted state. In the second track, the IT backbone is going to facilitate this scheme to offer the best healthcare to the poor communities in India.
